Welcome to Bílý Kůň, a charming bar nestled in the heart of Montreal at 354 Mont-Royal Ave E, Quebec H2T 1P9. Translated as "White Horse" from Czechoslovakian, Bílý Kůň is more than just a name; it's a nostalgic nod to the owner's fond memories of a beloved bar from his travels. With an inviting atmosphere adorned with quirky taxidermy—most notably, ostrich heads—a vintage tavern vibe envelops you as soon as you step inside.
Here, the laidback ambiance comes alive with live jazz music—especially on Fridays—filling the room with a touch of elegance and relaxation. The welcoming staff add to the overall warmth of the place, making every visit feel special and personalized.
The menu is a testament to a mix of Czechoslovakian heritage and local influences, offering an interesting selection of dishes. Signature items such as chorizo sausages, crispy croquettes, and flavorful spiced cashews provide a delightful culinary experience. Pair these bites with options like humus and pita or the exciting nachos au gratin layered with olives and jalapeños for a memorable snack. Every dish reflects a blend of tradition and innovation, capturing the essence of comfort food with a sophisticated twist.
For those with a penchant for drinks, Bílý Kůň boasts an impressive lineup of Czech spirits and liqueurs, including the renowned Slivovitz. The cocktails, such as the refreshing absinthe sour, showcase a dedication to craft. While some guests suggest a touch more sweetness would elevate certain drinks, the potency and authenticity remain commendable.
In every aspect, Bílý Kůň embodies a unique fusion of culture, cuisine, and community. Whether you're coming for the live jazz, the rich selection of beers, or simply to bask in the nostalgic vibes reminiscent of the late '90s and early 2000s Montreal scene, this establishment stands out as a must-visit locale. Come for the food, stay for the ambiance—Bílý Kůň is sure to leave a lasting impression on your palate and spirit.
Laidback atmosphere, live jazz and a welcoming staff, makes Bily Kun my favourite bar. The taxidermied ostrich heads dotting the walls are an inspired touch to a room that must have been an old man's tavern in a different era. I was told that the heads come from an ostrich farm outside Montreal. Apparently, before Bily Kun first opened, a false ceiling hid the gorgeous mouldings that were only discovered during renovations. Today, you'll find a selection of Czechoslovakian drinks on the menu, as the owner has an affinity for everything Czech. Actually, Bily Kun means "white horse" in Czechoslovakian and is the name of a bar in Czechoslovakia that the owner enjoyed. I heard he also owns the similarly named downtown bar called the Cheval Blanc. Bily Kun makes a mean mixed drink, but if you're looking for something hard-core and traditionally Czech, try the chilled Slivovitz.
Had a really good time here. Nice atmosphere. Nice service. The nacho dish was a bit plain but i really enjoyed the hummus plate.
Great Czech style pub/bar/jazz club Delicious house beer and wide selection of Czech spirits and liqueurs. Live jazz music in fridays
Friendly service, had the absinthe sour and the other bitter absinthe cocktail which I think needed a little simple syrup to balance out. Both were strong though. Attentive, efficient service. Nice vibe.
Good place great selection of drinks originally Czech and European ideas little snacks variety of beers absence and all the fun fun I like this place furthermore they have live music on Fridays Jazz duet usually I recommend this place it has a feeling of nostalgia of Montreal from late 90s and early 2000s!
Lovely and big bar, lots of drinks variety, good music and even better bathroom style lol. They had a czech vodka that goes on most of the drinks and its really damn good.
As someone who visited the place where Beherovka is made (Karlovy Vary) as a child, to find a Czech bar that serves cocktails based on the liqueur was a miracle! The drink menu is so unique, the atmosphere so chill - kind of Bierhalle- like, and the staff so so nice! Will be coming back for more!
Perhaps the most atmospheric bar that I’ve ever been to. And I’ve been to a few!
